The Otto Vollmann company, based on Rosendahler
Straße, invited industrialists, trade unionists and politicians,
along with the SPD from the Ennepe-Ruhr district, to Gevelsberg
for "economic policy discussions" with Regional Minister Ernst Schwanhold.
The minister from Lower Saxony, who himself worked
in a medium-sized company until 1990, subsequently became deputy
chairman of the SPD parliamentary party, then Peer Steinbrück's
successor in the ministerial office on 22 February. He wished host
Axel Vollmann every success with his business concept, before expressing
his opinions on economic policy issues and, amongst other things,
criticized the EU's subsidization policy. He spoke of how out of
touch Brussels was and of how he believed that the stipulated criteria
no longer corresponded with regional needs and thought this to be
the case, not just with regard to Zwieback Brandt's move to Thüringen.
Furthermore, the minister wondered if the social network was too
secure. The unemployed were better off being subsidized within an
employment relationship, rather than being paid the full rate for
doing nothing at all. The minister was presented with a sword from
Gevelsberg to take back home to Düsseldorf.
