At the plenary meeting (13th July) of the Südwestfälische
Industrie- und Handelskammer zu Hagen (SIHK), Harald Korte was unanimously
reelected President for a further three years. The industrialist
from Hagen (Gesenkschmiede Schöneweisse & Co. KG) now enters his
fourth period of office as SIHK President. Following his reelection,
Korte emphasized the fact that new ways must be found of restoring
the competitive ability of the economy. The extension of working
hours was a step in the right direction; however this alone would
not be enough to solve the problems.
The declining population in the chamber's district was a serious cause for concern in the economy due to the reduced purchasing power, fewer financial grants and decreasing tax revenues which this decline brings with it. "If companies and local authorities do not implement short-term strategic action, then in ten years time they will be overtaken by the consequences of negative development", warned Korte. For this reason, the SIHK has commissioned the renowned demographic economist Prof. Dr. Paul Klemmer to analyze the population development in all 23 local authorities and to draw up recommendations for action.
On the subject of other points of focus for the
activities of the SIHK, Korte mentioned improvement of the choice
of apprenticeships on offer, encouragement of collaboration between
schools and companies, the extension and continued development of
the A 45 and A46 motorways, and support for the "Gebäudetechnik
Südwestfalen e.V" association, which was established just a
few weeks ago. Korte believes that this collaboration, between sanitary
and electrical equipment manufacturers, is providing a "significant
contribution towards the stimulation of the local economy".
Six vice presidents were confirmed - three were newly elected
